Three Elves in a Trenchcoat

Yes, you read that right! I’m starting a new adventure called Waifu Wednesdays! Every Wednesday, I’ll be talking about one of my waifus and why I like her, and whether or not she’s a green flag or a red flag!

Husbandos and my nonbinary crushes get Saturdays, and those will be called Simpdays. I’ll also cover non-anime crushes on those days. But onto my first waifu!

And I mean my FIRST waifu! My first girl crush in anime! Grell Sutcliff!

Grell Sutcliff. The rogue Grim Reaper with a refurbished, custom reaper scythe that’s literally a chainsaw. The girl who simps over Sebastian Michaelis just as much as the fandom does. She is a woman of passion, fashion, and poise. Graceful, charming, and absolutely fricking gorgeous. I mean have you seen her eyes? Her beautiful emerald eyes and her long flowing ruby hair? And that suit! Peak fashion. (Peak sapphic fashion especially. Source: I like girls.).

For those of you who don’t know, Grell is from the immensely popular early 2010s anime Black Butler. She first appears as Ciel’s (the protagonist) aunt’s butler, until it is covered that she and the aunt are on a murder spree in London under the guise of Jack the Ripper. Upon her reveal, Grell whips out a chainsaw and kills the aunt. That’s horrible, yes, but what follows is an incredible fight sequence between Grell and Ciel’s butler Sebastian. Grell is infatuated with Sebastian (like I said, she drools over him as much as I did). She proves to be a capable match for our beloved demonic butler.

That fight scene had me sold. I am a sucker for fight scenes. If I see a character totally kicking ass, I am definitely going to simp–especially if it’s a really unique fight scene, like Grell with her chain saw! She made those modifications herself! Talk about talent! And she really is lovely. Some people like her teeth but I do.

Listen, this is the first time I’ve said it here, but I love monsters. I do. So the crazier the better!

Grell’s passion and devotion to Sebastian and her work follow her throughout the rest of the story, and she becomes more of a protagonist and actually helps Ciel on numerous occasions. I loved seeing the growth in her character and I quickly fell in love. I even had her as my computer background for several months!

I think there are two main reasons I simp for Grell. Number one, gender envy. Number two, I am a sucker for psychopathic killers with nice smiles and long hair (COUGH Bucky Barnes COUGH). The chainsaw just sold her for me.

Would it work between us? No, because I’m not Sebastion. But hey, I can dream!

Is she a red flag or a green flag? Let me start off by saying that I love finding other Grell simps. We’re aware of our issues and we just want to appreciate this fantastic character. But I also know that there is a lot to unpack about simping for a chainsaw swinging serial killer, even if she does have beautiful scarlet hair that would be perfect for braiding.

Seriously! Imagine braiding her hair like this!

And we could drink tea or cocoa and listen to true crime documentaries and eat dark chocolate and cherries…

So, yes, red flag. She does wear all red so I don’t know what’s surprising there. But I don’t care, I love her. She’s perfect!
