Book Review: Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree

I read this entire book yesterday in one go. Granted it was an audiobook but I was rushing to make sure my phone stayed on because I didn’t want to miss a single moment of it! It’s been forever since I read a book that had me screaming at the characters in (good natured!) frustration. Like, goddamn, woman, she’s in love with you, you giant orc himbo! (Spoilers ahead, obviously!)

If I had to sum this book up, I’d first say that it’s about an orc, Viv, who visits a coffee shop and realizes that adventuring was never her true calling. But, with no business experience, she’s got a long way to go. With a little help from new friends, she’s able to build a coffee shop up from the ground and make a name for herself. She partners up with a gentle, stoic succubus named Tandry, and the tension between the two grows so quickly and subtlety that I started yelling ‘JUST KISS ALREADY!’ out loud within a few chapters of them meeting. There’s intrigue and mystery, a good deal of slice-of-life, and complex and relatable characters all told in a humorous and familiar way that’ll remind you of goofy DnD campaigns with your friends. I got so attached to these characters so quickly, and I can’t wait to read the next book. I’m going to have to go back and read the physical copy now, just so I can experience it in a more traditional way!

If you love DnD, slice of life, high fantasy, friendship, and big protective himbo girlfriend X shy, scholarly lesbian disaster, then you need to read this book. Not now, yesterday. Yes, you’re overdue. Go read it! Go! Fly you fools! 100% would recommend this book to literally everyone. I loved every second of it. Great job, Travis Baldree, thank you for my new obsession!
